Writing

In our school, our writing lessons are inspired by high quality class texts. This in turn inspires our children to to produce.

Please find below our overview of units based on class texts alongside the genres of writing which will be taught within each unit.

English Writing Long Term Plan

Ready to Progress Catch-up Critieria for Writing

GPS (Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation)

Aspects of grammar and punctuation are taught alongside the genre of writing they are suited to. This ensures that children not only know how to use these aspects correctly, but they also know when to use them.

We have matched aspects of GPS to different genres of writing. These are shown in the following progression documents

Y1 text progression with grammar

Y2 text progression with grammar

Y6 text progression with grammar

Spelling

In addition to our teaching of phonics, which information about can be found here, we teach discrete spelling lessons once a week throughout the school.

We follow the Spelling Shed spelling scheme. This allows our Class Teachers to teach weekly spellings in class and then our children are able to practice them on the online platform ahead of their spelling test.

Designed by a team of teachers, the Spelling Shed scheme aligns with the English National Curriculum ensuring 100% curriculum coverage.

Please find below the Spelling Shed schemes for each year group:

Please Note: teachers may teach this in an alternative order.
